always in close pairs or chattering droves,

most seldom travel alone, but some do:

with prim umbrellas and primmer valises,

they avoid the crowds, avoid the seasons.

and for their prim pains, shrewdly, silently,

enjoy lower rates, badly-mended sheets,

empty dining rooms and lonely terraces.

then in summer, off-season for them, they

sit and dream about the terraces,

long to be jostled, to be forced to wait

for a table.  they sit and count pennies:

knowing others seldom travel alone,

always in close pairs or chattering droves,

sans umbrella, being in love with the rain,

off-season I, penny-wise us, alone
